Letter from Most Reverend Randolph R.Calvo
Bishop of Reno
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I write to you this year renewed by the Second Synod of the Diocese of Reno. I am ever mindful of the sacrifices hundreds of people made in order to take part in the Synod and was inspired by the faith, hope and vision of the people in our diocese as well as their openness to the guidance of the Holy Spirit along the way.
After three years of listening, sharing, praying and planning, we now have a Synod document that contains initiatives that map our future. These initiatives center around six themes that were identified through the voice of the people. They are Mission, Community, Cultural Diversity, Education, Family, Youth, Clergy and Spirituality and Prayer. Now is the time to continue our renewal through work directed toward the specific goals set forth in our Synod document.
Our annual Catholic Services Appeal (CSA) has been funding many areas of ministry discussed during the Synod, and this year’s CSA campaign will continue to do so. What has changed is that I now have input from all of you about the resources you most value and the programs you would like to see implemented.
Seminarian and priest support remain two of the highest priorities. CSA dollars help fund seminarian education as well as priests’ pensions and assistance. Funds also support many evangelizing ministries such as adult faith formation, religious education, and youth, prison and ethnic ministries. Your contribution will also enable us to continue to form and educate our people through our new Lay Ministry Leadership and Development program and the Annual Diocesan Conference.
I write to invite you to participate in CSA 2017. These funds are needed in order to maintain the current, ongoing work of the Church in northern Nevada. Our CSA theme this year calls on the Holy Spirit to Spark Our Faith into Action and Renew Us in Spirit. As Pope Francis said in his address to the Cardinals on March 15, 2013, “The Holy Spirit is the soul of the Church, with His life-giving and unifying strength. Of many He makes a single body – the mystical Body of Christ.”
We are that Body. My prayer is that the Holy Spirit will Renew Us in Spirit so that, together, we may continue our important work. I thank you for your support of CSA 2017 and pray that this year brings many blessings to you and your family.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Randolph R. Calvo
Bishop of Reno
