Begun in 1951, the Frontier of the Faith is a missionary effort of the Diocese of Reno. The objective of the Frontier of the Faith is to help raise funds for the support of Northern Nevada's mission priests and parishes.
The entire State of Nevada was one Diocese until 1995 when Pope John Paul II divided the State into two separate dioceses: Reno and Las Vegas. Twelve of the twenty-eight parishes in the Diocese of Reno are mission parishes and receive some support from our mission fund.
In addition to providing support to parishes, the Frontier of the Faith also provides direct support to priests by providing Mass stipends for them. Masses can be scheduled and offered in a timely manner by the priests serving in the Diocese.
Mass stipends are a means of providing support to our mission priests and parishes. The Ecclesiastical Province of San Francisco, of which we are part, now recommends the following:
1. A $5.00 stipend for a mass to be celebrated at a time left to the discretion of the priest.
2. A $10.00 stipend for a mass to be celebrated on a specific date.
We will, however, continue to accept and distribute mass stipends in lesser amounts.
Over the years, many benefactors have seen fit to include the Diocese in their wills and this has also been a great support for our mission parishes.
The Frontier of the Faith publishes a newsletter called the Frontier Shepherd five times yearly as a means of providing information about the Diocese.
