RENO — The Most Reverend Daniel Mueggenborg will be installed as the eighth Bishop of

Reno on September 24 by the Most Reverend Salvatore J. Cordileone, Archbishop of San Francisco. The

Mass of Episcopal Installation will be held at 2 p.m. at St. Rose of Lima Parish and is a ticketed event due

Pope Francis appointed Bishop Mueggenborg as Bishop of Reno on July 20, 2021, to succeed

Bishop Randolph R. Calvo who is retiring. Prior to coming to Reno, Bishop Mueggenborg served as

Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Seattle. He graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1984

with a geology degree and a related computer science degree. He attended the pre-theology program at St. Meinrad Seminary in Indiana and the theology program at the Pontifical North American College in

Rome. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Tulsa in 1989.

Born and raised in rural Oklahoma, Bishop Mueggenborg is eager to serve as shepherd of the

people and to continue interfaith dialogue throughout the Diocese of Reno.

“I am humbled, grateful and overjoyed with the opportunity to serve the people of Northern

Nevada, and I thank our Holy Father, Pope Francis, for this opportunity to serve in the American West,”

said Bishop Mueggenborg. “I grew up in rural western Oklahoma, so Nevada feels like home to me.”

He continued, “I am looking forward to working with the people of northern Nevada to continue

to accomplish important outreach through our faithful ministries of education, charitable services, and

parish life. I also look forward to partnering with all who share our desire to protect and promote human

life. With God’s help, I hope to serve in this office in the best possible way to strengthen the Church and

to promote the Gospel, which benefits us all.”

During his 30+ years as a priest, Bishop Mueggenborg has served as parochial vicar and pastor in

several parishes and in a variety of ministerial roles, including high school

chaplain and teacher, Newman Center chaplain, Director of Clergy and Education, and Vicar for

Religious Education. He also served on the administrative staff of the Pontifical North American College

and was adjunct professor at the Gregorian University. Pope Francis appointed him Auxiliary Bishop of

Seattle on April 6, 2017, and he was ordained bishop on May 31, 2017.

As the Roman Catholic Bishop of Reno, Bishop Mueggenborg will serve as shepherd to the

diocese’s 80,000 Catholics. The Diocese of Reno was erected in 1931 by Pope Pius XI. The Diocese of

Reno is comprised of the 12 northern counties of Nevada. It is a mission diocese with 28 parishes, six

missions, four elementary schools and one high school. Thirty-two active priests and 28 permanent

deacons serve the diocese. Fourteen retired priests and two retired bishops reside in the Diocese of Reno.
