Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
At beginning of last month, we held the Second Synod of the Diocese of Reno, a special gathering of nearly three hundred people, representatives from our parishes, religious, priests and deacons. The question before the Synod was: Where is the Holy Spirit leading us a Church in northern Nevada? The answers recommended by the Synod form the outline of a master plan for the diocese for the coming years.
What rang out clearly in the Synod was the need to increase and improve many of the services parishes and the diocese provide. Some of these are education of youth and their Christian formation; ongoing formation in the faith for all Catholics at every stage in life; and services to meet the ethnic and cultural diversity of our diocese. These are areas of ministry that Catholic Services Appeal (CSA) already funds. But there is much more to do as is clear from the Synod.
The CSA funds a wide range of ministries and is the means by which we can accomplish more of the goals set forth by the Synod.
Pope Francis has designated 2016 as a special Jubilee Year of Mercy for the Church throughout the world. It is a time to deepen our faith in God’s mercy and to live out Christ’s call for us to be “merciful as God the Father is merciful”. We will have events in our diocese to help mark this Jubilee Year which have been announced elsewhere. One of the ways we do carry out works of mercy is through our Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada. The CSA provides financial support to Catholic Charities to assist in many services it provides to those in need.
I write to invite you to participate in the CSA campaign. As you can see, there is much we need to do and so many services to provide people in various stages and situations of life. Your contribution is needed. And it will be much appreciated.
I pray this Jubilee Year of Mercy will be filled with grace for you. Thank you for your prayerful consideration of my request. May God bless you.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Randolph R. Calvo
Bishop of Reno
